MADURAI: College teachers across Tamil Nadu will go with a series of protests starting from November 6th 2025 demanding the State government to completely withdraw the Private Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2025 and abandon the attempts to privatize government aided colleges.

At a press conference in Madurai today, teachers’ associations MUTA and AUT have announced their protests schedule and said that it will start with a one-day token hunger strike at Madurai, Tirunelveli and Chennai.

“We totally oppose the moves to convert aided colleges into private universities. Our another important demand is to implement the Career Advancement Scheme (CAS) with disbursal of arrears for aided colleges teachers. Even though the Higher Education Minister has announced that the Private Universities Amendment Bill, 2025 will be withdrawn and reexamined, the threat to government aided colleges is far from over,” MUTA general secretary Dr.A.T.Senthamarai Kannan and AUT general secretary Dr.A.Xavior Selvakumar told reporters at the press meet in Madurai today-November 1st 2025.

As a first step to draw the State government’s attention for these two demands, AUT and MUTA have called for a hunger strike on November 6th and a continuous sit-in protest at the Directorate of Collegiate Education in Chennai from November 12th to 14th.

“If the government still do not respond fully to our demands, we will go on indefinite hunger strike across all government-aided colleges in Tamil Nadu from December 8th 2025. We want the government to stop the private universities proposal and also honour the assurance given by the Minister on CAS arrears and pay benefits for aided colleges teachers,” Dr.A.Xavior Selvakumar has said.

MUTA president Prof.P.K.Periasamy Raja has said that professorship for college teachers and grant of professor-level career advancement to all eligible govenrment and aided college teachers in the State are the other demands that will be highlighted during the AUT-MUTA protests.
