Start IIT in Madurai: Request to Vice-President to take up the matter with Union Education Minister

MADURAI: A delegation from Tamil Nadu Foodgrains Merchants Association had met the Vice-President of India Mr.C.P.Radhakrishnan at Coimbatore yesterday-October 28th 2025- and submitted a detailed 10-point memorandum to him to use his good offices for getting things done on various issues concering the State.

One of the points requested by the association is to establish Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Madurai to cater to the need for high quality technical education to students in southern districts of Tamil Nadu.

On behalf of Tamil Nadu Foodgrains Merchants Association Limited, its president Mr.S.V.S.S.Velshankar and honorary advisor Mr.S.P.Jeyapragasam along with directors of Sakthi Masala Mr.P.C.Duraisamy and Mrs.Shanthi Duraisamy had met the new Vice-President of India Mr.C.P.Radhakrishnan at Coimbatore on October 28th 2025 and greeted him for being elected as vice president of the country.

“We have given him a copy of our request letter addressed to Union Education Minister Mr.Dharmendra Pradhan to establish IIT in Madurai because it will benefit the students of 14 districts. Our plea is that Tamil Nadu should get one more IIT because already Chennai got it long back. The required land for setting up an IIT in Madurai will not be problem because land is available near the AIIMS here,” the association has said in its plea to the Union government.

Mr.Velshankar and Mr.Jeyapragasam have pointed out that Madurai city is well connected with other places through road and railways, and Madurai has a good airport also. “We request the Union Education Minister to start IIT-Madurai soon which will be a premier technical education institution for Madurai region,” they added.
