Eye drops made in Madurai will now go global: India’s Chief Economic Advisor inaugurates Rs.100 crore Aurolab manufacturing facility and lauds the common man’s Aravind Eye Hospital model of ‘Dr.V’

MADURAI: India’s prestigious eye care medical facility Aravind Eye Hospital in Madurai has today (October 5th 2025) added one more feather in its international cap by making a strong global foray into manufacturing of eye drops through its AUROLAB facility in Madurai which specializes in the making of ophthalmic consumables.

Dr.V.Anantha Nageswaran, Chief Economic Advisor, Government of India, had inaugurated the Aurolab’s advanced eye drops manufacturing facility which came up at a cost of nearly Rs.100 crores at Aurolab premises in Veerapanjan-Sivagangai Main Road in Madurai.

The Aurolab’s advanced eye drops manufacturing new facility with all international standards ( 75,000 sq.ft in three floors and 36 million doses of eye drops manufacturing capacity per year) was inaugurated by him in the presence of Mr.M.V.Muthuramalingam, Founder-Chairman, Velammal Educational Trust, who was the guest of honour.

The inspiration of its great founder late Dr.G.Venkataswamy (popularly known as Dr.V in medical circles) is always great. The multiplier effect of this world class eye drops manufacturing facility will be very huge for eye care and local employment opportunities. Aravind Eye Hospital in Madurai had demolished the public perception that not-for-profit organizations will not maintain good quality care standards. By maintaining quality and cost control, the Aravind Eye Hospital has grown global and its contribution is inestimable. Dr.R.D.Sriram, Managing Director of Aurolab-Madurai, Dr.S.Aravind, Director (New Projects) and secretary of Aurolab Trust, Mr.Thulasiraj Ravilla, Executive Director of LAICO, Mr.Venkatesh Kannan, Head (Pharma Division) and R.D.Ravindran, chairman, Aravind Eye Care System, were among those who spoke on how the Aurolab from Madurai had become a top class sought after facility for ophthalmic products like IOL, sutures etc.

The founder of Aravind Eye Hospital in Madurai Dr.G.Venkataswamy had dedicated his life to eliminate needless blindness and today Aurolob which was founded in the year 1992 as part of Aravind Eye Care System manufactures ophthalmic consumables like intraocular lenses, surgical sutures, eye care pharma products and diagnostic devices at affordable cost.

R.Krishnakumar, senior manager (Regulatory Officer), Aurolab, had welcomed the gathering while J.Venkateswaran, assistant divisional manager-pharma, had proposed a vote of thanks for this inaugural event held at Aurolab campus in Madurai today and was attended by well-known personalities from various fields.
