
MADURAI: Teaching staff and pensioners of Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) have staged a protest in the varsity campus here today-June 12th 2025- demanding their May month salary, pension and promotions that are long pending under the Career Advancement Scheme (CAS) for the faculty members of the university.
The Madurai Kamaraj University Faculty Association (MUFA) had called for the protest to condemn the delay in disbursing their May month salary and inordinate delay in approving the CAS promotions for MKU faculty by the Higher Education Department while the MKU Pensioners Association too had joined the protest demanding the last month pension.
Dr.T.Arokiadoss, MUFA president and Dr.C.Muniyandi, general secretary along with teaching staff took part in the protest while the pensioners’ association led by its president Dr.A.Srinivasan and secretary Mr.A.Swaminathan have come in their support along with a large number of pensioners demanding the varsity to disburse last month’s pension.
They raised slogans urging the MKU administration to take up the issue with concerned officials in the State government to ensure that a quick solution is found for salary, pension and CAS promotions. Later, the representatives from both the associations met MKU Registrar in-charge Prof.M.Ramakrishnan and discussed with him about their demands.
“The issues raised by MUFA and pensioners will be taken up with top authorities in Chennai next week. The CAS matter will be conveyed to Higher Education Department when I visit Chennai coming Monday.,” the Registrar in-charge told ‘Lotus Times’ media after the meeting today afternoon.
MUFA president Dr.T.Arokiadoss and general secretary Dr.C.Muniyandi told reporters that the Tamil Nadu Government and Higher Education Department must come with a permanent solution to solve the financial crisis of MKU and the appeal from today’s protest is to the Finance Department to sanction funding support for monthly salary.
The MKU Pensioners Association president Dr.A.Srinivasan has said that the university is facing financial crisis since November 2021 and getting pension became a perennial problem for varsity pensioners who are struggling daily. He also demanded the clearing of DA arrears which is pending for the last 10 months to MKU staff and pensioners.
