MADURAI: A request has been made to the Union Finance Minister Ms.Nirmala Sitharaman to issue a statement from her department for stopping the social media rumours about changes that are going to come in GST slab rates.

The Tamil Nadu Foodgrains Merchants Association had written a letter to her from Madurai today-June 11th 2025- urging her to issue a statement immediately because the traders and manufacturers are in great fear after seeing in some sections of media and in social media that the existing GST slab rates will be changed.

“We request you to stop that rumour with your statement. The existing taxation slab in GST is 0, 3, 5, 12, 18 and 28 per cent. The rumour is that the slabs will be changed to two slabs of 5 per cent and 18 per cent. This is under circulation in social media. In order to stop that rumour, we want an official statement to be issued by you,” the association has appealed in its letter to Union Finance Minister today, signed by president S.V.S.S.Velshankar, honorary secretary S.Sai Subramaniam and honorary advisor S.P.Jeyapragasam. They said that lot of constructive changes and GST rates reduction took place in the last few years to safeguard the genuine taxpayers.
