MADURAI: The Gangaikondan goods shed near Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu will be operating 24 X 7 from June 11th 2025 as the railways had decided to make it round-the-clock functional for accelerating the loading and unloading of goods.

Presently, the working hours of Gangaikondan goods shed are from 6 am to 10 pm and from tomorrow the working hours have been further extended to facilitate uninterrupted loading and unloading so as to improve overall efficiency and reduce delays for consignments, according to a press release received from the Madurai Division of Southern Railway here yesterday.

This goods shed currently handles foodgrains, fertilizers and containers as inward goods while cement and containers are its major outward goods. “The decision to make it 24 X 7 is expected to create a win-win situation for customers and the railways. Improved wagon movement will benefit the railways, and the increased loading and unloading activity will benefit the workers involved,” the press release had added.
