
MADURAI: Hundreds of children who had eye cancer and got treated successfully at the Aravind Eye Hospital in Madurai to get back their eye sight had gathered here today- May 24th 2025- to thank the eye doctors who gave them vision to see the world.
A special celebration event was organized by Aravind Eye Hospital to commemorate ‘Retinoblastoma Awareness Week’ and hundreds of children who had overcome eye cancer had assembled along with their parents to participate in the day long fun activities and entertainment session organized by the Aravind Eye Hospital here today.
“Aravind Eye Hospital in Madurai is now in its 50th year of visionary journey in eye care. We are now observing Retinoblastoma Week and today we are all here to celebrate the survivors of eye cancer. We treated 1,000 children in our hospital and there are 923 survivors because of the great multi-disciplinary doctors’ team. I am informing you today that 50 per cent of children who had that eye cancer got back their vision for normal life and another 25 per cent got better vision. This is a part of our ‘Ring of Hope’ project to support children with eye cancer,” Dr.Usha Kim, Chief of Orbit Department, Aravind Eye Care System-Madurai, has said in her opening remarks while addressing the large gathering of treated children and their happy parents at Aravind Eye Hospital in Madurai today- May 24th 2025.
EYE GENETICS PROJECT:
Informing that there is a genetics project that is going on for eye care diseases, Dr.Usha Kim has said that surviving a cancer is not easy and that too particularly eye cancer where ‘Retinoblastoma’ affects from a three-months baby infant.
“Today, these children had come out of eye cancer. This is a motivation and inspiration for all of us. So, a celebration event was conducted for the eye cancer survivors who are all children so that we can engage them for career counselling, psycho-social activities, nutrition guidance etc. These sessions today will be helpful to parents also. We conducted special competitions for the children here today with lot of fun activities and entertainment. I thank all the mothers here today because they are the strongest persons who supported the eye cancer affected children,” Dr.Usha Kim has said in her opening remarks here today- May 24th 2025.
Mr.Nicholas Francis of CanHR gave a motivational session on career guidance to the eye cancer surviving students guiding them on what they can study after 10th standard for job opportunities that will suit thier life and aspirations.
Dr.P.Namperumalsamy, Chairman Emeritus, Aravind Eye Care Sytem, Dr.R.D.Ravindran, Chairman, Aravind Eye Care System, Dr.Usha Kim, Chief of Orbit Department and Dr.G.Natchiar, Director Emeritus, were among those present along with hospital staff and doctors.
