Madurai Gandhi Museum renovation works will be completed in 3 months; International Museum Day celebrated today with students

MADURAI: Renovation works of the famous Gandhi Memorial Museum in Madurai will be completed in three months time as already 80 percent of renovation project is over and is now in being given finishing touches, Mr.K.R.Nanda Rao, museum secretary, has said today.

“This is a heritage building that was built 300 years ago by the great Rani Mangammal. Now, at an outlay of Rs.10 crores, the renovation works have been taken up a couple of years back with government funding support. The finishing touches are taking place now and in next three months the entire work will be completed to preserve this heritage structure for posterity and tell our future younger generations about our history,” he told ‘Lotus Times’ media here today-May 19th 2025.

MUSEUM DAY CELEBRATION:

A special program was organized in Gandhi Memorial Museum in Madurai today to mark the International Museum Day which is celebrated every year on May 18th 2025. Competitions were conducted for students of schools and colleges to create more awareness among them about the importance of museums and in Gandhi Memorial Museum in Madurai in particular.

Prof.R.Raja Govindasamy, Rotary District Governor and former Principal of Thiagarajar College in the city, was the chief guest to distribute certificates and prizes to the students.

“We learn a lot about our history and heritage by going to museums. The Gandhi Memorial Museum here is a pride of Madurai because the children will come to know about Mahatma Gandhi’s life history by seeing the galleries here,” Mr.Raja Govindasamy has said.

Mr.N.Ramalingam, EC member, Gandhi Memorial Museum-Madurai and well-known social worker Mr.Nellai Balu had motivated the students to visit more museums and also participate in competitions because it gives lot of confidence and knowledge.

Mr.R.Natarajan, education officer of the museum, had welcomed the gathering while Gandhian studies expert Dr.R.Devadoss had proposed a vote of thanks.
