MADURAI: An important decision was taken by Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs which was chaired by Prime Minister Mr.Narendra Modi in New Delhi today- April 30th 2025- to include caste enumeration in the upcoming main population census.

“As per Article 246 of the Constitution of India, Census is a Union subject listed at 69 in the Union list in the Seventh Schedule. While some States have conducted surveys to enumerate castes, these surveys have varied in transparency and intent, with some conducted purely from a political angle thereby creating doubts in the society. So, now it has been decided that caste enumeration should be included in the main census that takes population count instead of being done as a separate survey. Caste was excluded from all census operations conducted since Independence,” according to a press release issued by the Central government after the Cabinet Committee meeting today and it added that the Cibinet has approved to include caste enumeration in the main Census across India.
