‘Human Milk Bank’ opened in Madurai to feed babies with mother’s milk, thanks to Rotary Club initiative with Rs.50 lakhs project cost

MADURAI: In a significant effort to provide mother’s milk to newborn infant babies, a ‘Human Milk Bank’ was established at Rio Maternity and Children Hospital in Madurai (Pandikoil Ring Road junction), thanks to the initiative taken by Rotary Club of Madurai Metropolis and Devi Crop Science.

Madurai District Collector M.S.Sangeetha had inaugurated the ‘Devi Crop Science-Rotary Human Milk Bank’ at Rio Hospital here yesterday-April 25th 2025-and lauded the Rotary Club of Madurai Metropolis for conceiving the Human Milk Bank project because it helps the undernourished infant babies by giving mother’s milk which is important for child’s health.

“Human Milk Bank is a signature project for us, it is a life-saving project implemented with a project cost of Rs.50 lakhs which was made possible due to our club member Mr.R.Theenachandran’s visionary contribution and the matching grant received from Rotary International. This human milk bank project reflects the true spirit of Rotary in action. Our gratitude to chairman to Devi Crop Science Mr.R.Theenachandran for making this project possible,” Mr.S.Pandithurai, president, Rotary Club of Madurai Metropolis, has said at the inaugural function yesterday.

THANKS TO RIO HOSPITAL:

He stressed that the human milk bank will provide nutritious milk to newborns and will be of immense use to vulnerable infants and families. The Rotary Club president has also thanked the Rio Hospitals chairman Dr.M.Saravanan for giving full support to establish the essential infrastructure in the hospital premises.

“This project gives lot of satisfaction because it touches the lives directly. Some mothers will not have milk secretion and through our Rotary Human Milk Bank we will be able to provide mother’s milk to the newborn babies. We can store and give it. More public awareness will be created to get mother milk donors and feed the infants,” Rotary club president Mr.S.Pandithurai has said.

Dr.U.T.Vassan, Rotary club secretary, Mr.E.Arularasu, treasurer and members including Mr.RVN Kannan and R.Kalairajam were among the invitees for this inaugural function.
