MADURAI: The difficulty faced by a family in Avaniapuram in Madurai to get a body cremated on 25th April 2020 is an alert message to Madurai Corporation authorities.
A 75-year-old woman by name Ramakka died today morning. Amidst Corona lockdown restrictions, the family members made arrangements for cremation at Avaniapuram cremation ground and paid Rs.4,500 to the workers there. When the body was brought for cremation, they refused to start the work citing various reasons.
Shocked family members pleaded with the cremation ground workers to help them on humanitarian grounds. But, the workers started complaining against Madurai Corporation for not paying them enough wages etc and not providing facilities there.
“We don’t have identity card and in this lockdown time it is very tough for us to tackle police. There is no proper wages for us… Our life is full of struggle and the Corporation must take care of our needs,” says cremation ground worker Muniasamy.
After more than three hours of waiting and pleading, the body of that woman was cremated and the tense family heaved a sigh of relief.
