MADURAI: The Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry had urged the Union government to set up National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) in Madurai to provide an opportunity for offering postgraduate courses and pharmacological research activities in pharma sector in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu.
“In the 8th Finance Commission meeting held on 20th January 2011, it was recommended to set up a National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research Centre (NIPER) at Madurai. It was approved by the Union Cabinet on September 13, 2011. It was also approved by the Union Expenditure Department on June 13, 2016. The file was again
reviewed before the Union Finance Commission on March 26, 2018. The National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) did not take off in Madurai for nearly 12 years. The Government of Tamil Nadu has allotted 116 acres of land free of cost near Thirumogur in Madurai District for setting up a NIPER at Madurai. A proposal of
Rs.1,100 crore has also been submitted to the Union Finance Ministry for setting up the required infrastructure,” TN Chamber president Mr.N.Jegatheesan has said in a press statement issues from Madurai on 3rd January 2022.
In the year 2011, the 8th Finance Commission confirmed for setting up of 8 NIPER centres of which one was Madurai. NIPER centres have already been set up at Ahmedabad, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Hajipur, Kolkata, Mohali and Lucknow and they are functioning now. But no action has been taken so far to set up ‘NIPER’ in Madurai alone, which was included in the list, he pointed out.
Mr.Jegatheesan had stressed that the establishment of NIPER Centre at Madurai will certainly be a major impetus for research activities in the field of pharmacology in South Tamil Nadu. “Madurai Kamaraj University will also have new opportunities to offer various medical research courses to the students in collaboration with NIPER. The establishment of NIPER Centre at Madurai will transform Madurai into a medical hub and will promote trade and industrial development in south Tamil Nadu,” the TN Chamber president said.
