MADURAI: Hundred years ago, Mahatma Gandhi changed his attire to loin and dhoti and created a new identity for himself as a simple man fighting for country’s freedom from the British. Gandhiji came to Madurai first time by rail on 22nd September 1921. Commemorating the 100 years and centenary day of his alteration in dress and making dhoti his identity, floral tributes were paid to the Mahatma at Madurai Railway Junction here on 22nd September 2021- Wednesday evening. Mr.Padmanabhan Ananth, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Madurai Division of Southern Railway, led the special event where senior officials and staff had paid floral tributes to mark the centenary year of Mahatma Gandhi’s new attire and his arrival in Madurai hundreds years ago.
DRM Mr.Padmanabhan Ananth, paid tributes to the photograph of Gandhiji at Gandhi Corner in the Madurai railway station. Mr.Thanneeru Ramesh Babu, ADRM, Mr.V.Prasanna, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Mr.D.L.Ganesh, railway station director and Mr.Mahesh Gadkari, Divisional Environment and Housekeeping Manager, were among those who were present and paid floral tributes and respects to Mahatma Gandhi.
A plaque about the arrival of Gandhiji in Madurai 100 years back is there in the Madurai Railway Junction. There is a ‘Gandhi Corner’ and photographs about his visit to Madurai are there in this place.
