MADURAI: An impressive outward goods freight traffic was registered by the Madurai Division of Southern Railway as the freight handling earnings had touched over Rs.100 crore in the last five months of this fiscal year. The outward goods traffic is being handled at Tuticorin, Vadipatti and Mnanamadurai in the Madurai Division. While chemical manure and coal are sent outward from Tuticorin, the freight handling of tractors is being done from Vadipatti near Madurai and charcoal sent from Manamadurai. All these are transported by rail, according to a press release received from the Madurai Division of Southern Railway here today- on 14th September 2021.
“Nine lakh tonnnes of goods are transported by 324 goods rakes in the last five months. Totally 37 rakes of coal were handled in the corresponding period of last year with earnings of Rs.12 crores. Now it has been doubled as the earning was Rs.24 crores in 73 rail rakes in the last five months of this fiscal year,” the press release informed. Similarly, the earnings through tractors’ transport via new modified goods wagons was Rs.6.4 crores (up from Rs.5.4 crore from same period last year). The Business Development Unit of Southern Railway’s Madurai Division is taking many steps to get new stream of freight / goods traffic. “Due to these constant efforts, a new traffic of De-oiled cake was transported from Tuticorin Harbour to Raj-Nandagaon of Nagpur Division in South East Central Railway and because of this Rs.32.5 lakhs has been fetched on this account, the railway press issued in Madurai on 14th September 2021 had added.
