S.Rly’s new data centre comes up at Chennai with cutting-edge technology

MADURAI: A new Southern Railway Data Centre which was renovated with latest cutting edge technology and protection systems was inaugurated in the second floor of the Chennai Moore Market Complex near Chennai Railway Station. This data centre has been functioning in the same building till now, but it had to be technologically upgraded due to increasing need for infrastructure renovation.

The Southern Railway Data Centre caters to the Passenger Reservation System, Unreserved Ticketing System and Mobile Ticketing System over Southern, South Western and South Central Railways. The old data centre was established in 1985 and over the years it had become congested and hence the need for infrastructure renovation to cater to the steady growth, touching thousands of counters and over nine lakh tickets per day including the online ticketing platform of IRCTC. So, the new data cantre of Southern Railway came up in the second floor of the Chennai Moore Market Complex, a press release from the railway had informed on 1st September 2021. The Chennai Regional Data Centre houses the servers of PRS, UTS, Mobile Ticketing, National Train Enquiry System and a host of other services / applications for public and railways’ internal working. This centre had rooms for servers, communication equipment, service providers and renovated / refurbished offices of Chief Commercial Manager. passenger marketing, Centre for Railway Information System, Railway Console Office, Data Base Management etc.

Precision air-conditioning to maintain temperature at optimum levels, automatic fire suppression system, fore detection system advanced, biometric based access control system at two levels, water leakage detection system, rodent repellent system, video surveillance, plush ambience interiors, work stations, LAN cabling, wifi and public address system are among the features of the new data centre opened in Chennai.

Divisional Railway Manager-Chennai was the agency executing the work for the Commercial Department of Southern Railway with a fund sanction of Rs.14.31 crores granted by the Railway Board. The press release information has said that NIKOM Infra Solutions Pvt Ltd, New Delhi, was the executing agency.
