MADURAI: Some strong questions have been raised by the BJP on the rationale  behind the complete shutdown of granite quarries in Madurai district since 2012 which left more than a lakh of people jobless and impoverished especially in  Melur taluk.

Tamil Nadu BJP State Secretary Prof.Dr.R.Srinivasan had described the IAS officer U.Sagayam’s granite quarries’ violations report as ridiculous, mallacious and misconceived’ since there are lot of contradictions and variations between his report and the actual government data on the issue of granite quarries / granite exports of Madurai district.

(VIDEO) BJP’s DEMANDS AND PEOPLE RESPONSE:

The Madurai Rural district unit of the BJP went to the people through ‘Thaamarai Payanam‘ on December 16th and 17th 2018 to mobilize public opinion and put pressure in the State Government to open the quarries immediately.

Mr.Maha. Suseendhran, Madurai Rural district president, led the mass campaign in Melur taluk where the people were worst hit.

First day of the campaign had covered several places including Idaiyapatti, Thiruvadhavur, Keelavalavu, Keelaiyur and Melur where a large number of people who were affected by the closure of granite quarries turned up to hear the BJP leaders and sought their support.

BJP MOOTS ROADMAP TO STATE GOVT:

1. Firstly, open those granite quarries that are facing no court cases, complaints or violations. There are 147 granite quarries in Madurai district. Of these 84 are facing cases and the remaining 63 quarries have no charges against them. So, allow these 63 to function in the interest of people in Melur area for their livelihood.

2. Why should you close State-owned TAMIN quarry?  Keelaiyur people are suffering. Think of quarry workers welfare.

3. Since there are INCONSISTENCIES in the reports and no proper METHODOLOGY, the State Government should appoint a senior IAS officer as SPECIAL OFFICER to find the facts about illegal quarrying and take steps to open the quarries. PUNISH THE GUILTY AND ACCUSED. DON’T PUNISH THE POOR PEOPLE.

4. BJP also wants a FAST TRACK COURT to speed up the cases pending in courts against Madurai granite quarries.

5. Take action against government officials / govt staff who were hand in glove when the alleged violations took place in granite quarries in Madurai district some years ago. WERE THEY SLEEPING THEN?

6. BJP will take up the granite quarry issue and workers welfare issue to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Madurai district collector. The CM must intervene soon.

7. When State Government can run sand quarries, why not do the same with granite quarries? COMPLETE BAN AND CLOSURE IS UNJUSTIFIABLE AND INHUMAN.
